M - Robert Brown
Fittingly,
Robert Brown's last appearance as M is his most effective. The sequence in which
he orders Bond to resign because he refuses to stop his pursuit of Sanchez has
some of the tension of the Sean Connery/Bernard Lee sequences. Although the
scene is rather implausible when examined in detail. Why are intelligence agencies
using a major tourist attraction - the Hemingway House in Florida - as a base
of operations? Why would M post conspicuous guards with machine guns in full
view of the public when there are no dangerous criminals anywhere in the vicinity?
Nevertheless, M's performance with Bond is refreshing and Brown delivers his
best performance in his swan song as Bond's crusty superior.
