M - Bernard Lee

For reasons known only to screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz, M ludicrously decides ro drop in on Bond in the middle of the night to inform him of his assignment. The situation provides an opportunity for some low level humour when Bond plays a cat-and-mouse game to prevent M from seeing the scantily clad Miss Caruso. M does have one of the film's best lines, however, after Bond uses a preposterously noisy and ornate machine to make a cappuccino for his boss. After being presented with the drink, M stares in disbelief at the machine and asks rhetorically, 'Is that all it does?'
