Renegade Soviet General Orlov is infuriated by the warming of relations with the West. When his suggestion to attack NATO forces in Europe is rejected, he decides to enact the plan with a group of loyalists. He forms a partnership with Kamal Khan, an aristocratic smuggler of gems who operates out of India. Orlov agrees to steal valued jewels from the Kremlin and sell them to Khan. The entire scenario is part of an elaborate plot in which Orlov will detonate a nuclear bomb on a US military base in West Germany. He predicts the USA will be blamed and be forced to withdraw their forces, thus leaving Western Europe open to Soviet attack. Khan has a business relationship with fellow smuggler Octopussy, the beautiful owner of an exotic traveling circus. When James Bond is assigned to the case he forms an alliance with Octopussy, who eventually discovers that her circus has unwittingly carried the nuclear bomb to the US army base. Bond manages to deactivate the device with a second to spare, then attempts to rescue Octopussy who has been captured by Khan. In a hand-to-hand battle with Gobinda atop Khan's aeroplane, Bond eventually saves Octopussy and sends Khan to a flaming death.
Review
Possibly the best film of the Roger
Moore era, containing realistic villains and likable allies. The exotic locations
are up to scratch and the pre-credits sequence is inspired. Can be watched
time and time again.
