This is a typewriter-sized Soviet decoding machine desperately desired by MI6. Housed in the Soviet embassy in Istanbul, the Lektor is the bait used by SPECTRE to lure Bond into a deadly trap. Curiously, the device is called the Spektor in Fleming's novel, wherein the villains are SMERSH agents. Because Bond's adversaries onscreen were from SPECTRE, the device would be confused with the criminal organisation. Thus, the screenwriters changed the decoder's name to Lektor.
