The arrogant Mafia don accepts a $1 million payment from Goldfinger in return for smuggling an atomic bomb into the USA from Red China. When Solo refuses to forego his payment and become a partner in 'Operation Grand Slam', Goldfinger has him crushed to death in a Lincoln Continental at a car scrapyard -a sequence that proved to be upsetting to many Americans, according to production designer Ken Adam. It wasn't because of objections to Solo's horrendous fate; rather, people could not bear to see the wholesale destruction of a new Lincoln Continental, which at that time represented the American 'dream car'.
